Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about learning Latvian textile crafts, from our workshops in Sigulda and Cēsis to getting started with your first project.
Not at all! Our Knitting Foundations course is designed specifically for complete beginners with zero experience. Most students complete their first scarf or dishcloth within 4–6 weeks of regular practice. We start with the absolute basics—casting on, the knit stitch, and purl stitch—and build from there at a pace that works for you.
Latvian mittens are famous for their intricate two-color geometric patterns that tell stories—each region has its own signature designs. The patterns aren't just decorative; they're rooted in centuries of Baltic textile tradition and carry cultural meaning. When you learn to knit them, you're connecting with a living heritage that's still celebrated today.
No—we recommend waiting until you've talked with an instructor. The right needles, yarn weight, and tools depend on what you're making and your hand size. We'll guide you through affordable options and help you avoid buying the wrong things. Most beginner setups cost less than €15.
We run in-person rūkdarbi workshops in Sigulda and Cēsis, two beautiful historic towns in the Gauja Valley. These locations matter—being together in a textile-focused space creates a deeper learning experience and connects you with our community. We currently offer in-person classes only, but we're happy to discuss what works best for you when you contact us.
Most people pick up the fundamental crochet stitches—chain, single crochet, double crochet—within 2–3 classes. You'll be comfortable enough to start simple projects like dishcloths or scarves pretty quickly. The learning curve is gentler than knitting because you're only working with one active loop at a time.
Absolutely. Understanding how traditional Latvian patterns work—the symmetry, the repeat structures, the color relationships—teaches you the grammar of textile design. Once you've studied authentic patterns, you'll have the skills to adapt them, combine them, and eventually create your own designs that honor the tradition while expressing your voice.
